This article takes you through some simple hardware and software solutions to save those files, weighs the pros and cons of each approach then. New MediaMonkey doesn't go bananas. External hard drives and network-attached storage are local ways to back up your files to a physical drive that lives outside your PC. Since network-attached storage devices are typically for the true home networker with multiple computers to safeguard from data loss, most people looking for a basic backup option shall lean toward external hard drives, like a few of these CNET favorites. The Clickfree Portable Backup Drive commences backing up your drive for you automatically. After purchasing an external drive, you'll just plug it into your computer to get started. Most conventional drives like the ultraportable 320GB Seagate FreeAgent Go will trigger your computer to open a separate drive folder, like "Removable Drive F:". Copying or dragging the files you'd like to save from their original folder into the external drive folder transfers them over. The purpose-built 320GB Clickfree Portable Backup Drive provides an even simpler backup method. After plugging it in, the drive's native software automatically finds and backs up all of your computer's data. Not bad for about $200. If that's not enough storage space for you, there's also the four-bay Drobo for serious data nuts. It's not without its shortcomings, including its high price. For backups, it's best used for creating redundancy in case one of your other drives fail. One of the primary benefits of using software to copy your files is being able to schedule backups of your data, although all programs will let you back up data as well manually. While most of the people will find online storage solutions the easiest to maintain, desktop backup software has its merits. For example, for $50, the Acronis True Image Home 2009 images your hard drive, including your programs, documents, music, photos, and Outlook e-mail. In the event of a crash, you can boot it from the PC or from a CD. It's incredibly simple to set up a backup schedule so you never have to worry about your data again. DialPlus can serve directions and hours while you're on the phone with a business. Windows 10 in a nutshell. DialPlus was one of more original start-ups presenting this morning at Under the Radar in Mountain View, Calif. DialPlus is a native mobile software that pulls visual information from the Web before, during, or after a call to your Internet-ready mobile phone. When a close friend calls you, for instance, you'll be able to see some social networking information. If you call a continuing business, its Web site details should surface. While it's not listed as a criterion, the software won't be of any use if you're not using an earbud or Bluetooth headset, as the contextual details display on your screen. As one additional perk, you can send the data you see to a friend; a restaurant directions or menu were two use cases. While DialPlus will prompt your pal to download the app, contacts can view the HTML data in their browser also. Ads shall be one income model. I'm not loving the interface--it isn't especially attractive and looks like it could require some extensive scrolling as data fills the screen--but I do like the idea a lot. So did the judges, who rightly requested that the service more importantly pull in details about callers you don't know, like an on-the-fly caller ID. This would be immensely useful if DialPlus can find and deliver at the very least a person or organization's name before your phone kicks the call to voice mail. DialPlus has an alpha version available for Windows Mobile phones (5 and 6) that you can download right now. As those of you with older PCs may own noticed the hard method, some of the latest features in Apple's Safari 4 beta for Windows need a graphics cards with at least 64MB of on-board Ram memory that supports at least DirectX 9. This creates it the first of all internet browser I've read of with an very revealing graphics greeting card necessity, but is this a big deal really? Lacking from up coming to the Take a note of icon is definitely the toggle for Top rated Sites. DirectX 9 has been around since 2004, and you could pick up a card for your counter top that helps it for round 20 money. This isn't very quite similar to House windows requiring a considerable hardware update for Vista, although it is annoying definitely. What is weird can be that Covers Flow on iTunes shall work on these elderly equipment, consisting of the primary Glass windows XP computer system I employ at do the job. The design cards is more aged, but, as you can observe in the screenshots, Cover Circulation functions in iTunes and isn't going to in Safari 4. Star Apps: Todd Rundgren. This leads to my various other complaint about the beta: Safari presents no notice when your images card is definitely not compliant. Leading Sites and Go over Move merely don't look. Thus if the web browser must require an update, when iTunes doesn't, the least Apple could do is include some type or kind of warning. Taken on the same Glass windows XP equipment, Cover Movement in iTunes works fine. This isn't the biggest package in the community, and Safari 4 is even now in beta so there's lots of time to operate out the kinks. But this moves me as a significantly frustrating trouble, if nothing at all else, when you consider that the design and graphics factors of Apple software are one of their big attractions. Apple advises that one solution could come to be to up grade your images card motorists, which decided not to do the job for me. Apple got not came back my call asking brief review at the period of syndication. If you include additional alternatives or concerns to challenges in Safari 4 beta, notify me about them in the comments. If you had been seeking for something besides Silver reports previous week, you had to do a little of digging probably. Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 9 Free debuted two new detection engines as the company fights to keep its well-known freeware competitive. Mike Shinoda, Linkin Park's founding rapper and multi-instrumentalist. Linkin Park embraced the digital age early on. Even prior to changing the spelling of their name (because LincolnPark.com was already taken), founding members promoted their music in online chat rooms when most bands were still relying on street teams. The eventually Grammy-winning, chart-topping alternative band, best known for such hits as "In the End," "Numb," "Breaking the Habit," "What I've Done," and "New Divide," has used MySpace to promote the "A Thousand Suns" album and has topped 1 billion views on YouTube. Linkin Park remains the most followed band on Facebook (over 55 million users), and has already developed its own game -- Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion. The band isn't letting up on the technological development -- they've been working with software manufacturer OpenLabs on StageLight, an innovative, music-creation iphone app for Windows 7 and 8. They've even released a special Linkin Park Edition of the software. Download.com rapped with Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda about StageLight, video games, whether MySpace has a future, and what's on the horizon for the band now that vocalist Chester Bennington is singing for Stone Temple Pilots. How did you become involved with StageLight? I've had a relationship with OpenLabs for years. I've used their software and hardware onstage. A few years ago I was transitioning from a more primitive setup and I realized that I needed a software solution that could play anything that I made in the studio that required a computer-based system. And once I met with OpenLabs and saw the gear that they had, they convinced me that this PC-based system would be the real way to go. When I was using it onstage or in the studio, I'd be asking for additions or something specific that I might need in whatever situation, and over time it developed into a relationship that resulted in StageLight. What sets StageLight apart? StageLight is more like a music writing and music creation software, though it has roots in performance. But we started looking at it as there really isn't great music-creation software for PCs. Apple obviously has GarageBand, but there isn't an application that teaches and allows a brand-new user who's never really done a song before to make something from scratch. StageLight is designed in order that within five to ten minutes a user who's never made a song before can create a song and share it on SoundCloud or Facebook, or any other place where they could interact with their friends and family online. What distinguishes the Linkin Park Edition? There's a special edition called the "Linkin Park Edition," which includes a library of sounds that we made in the studio; and if you buy that edition you could use sounds that are Linkin Park sounds and make your own songs. It's almost like an expansion pack. Going back a few years, Link Park released 8-Bit Rebellion, in 2010. Latest RealPlayer drops its beta label. Why did you decide to release a video game? Well, we're gamers to some extent. A lot of our older fans know that when Halo first came out, that was one of the plain things that people used to joke about our band, that we were super into that game, in the first three editions of it. We would play on the bus and challenge other bands and challenge fans and it was so funny how competitive we were. Rebellion was created as a visual reference to the stuff that we grew up with, things like Nintendo. If you finished the game, you'd get a free song. At the time, it made us a little nervous to do, because it was something different from what others were doing. But I think, for us, it set the tone for what we're doing now and what we can do in the future, because, as you know, the industry at large is moving in that direction, like the Jay-Z album with Samsung and other persons putting out exclusives with various brands; so if it's something that is done right, it doesn't have to be this weird, corporate thing. It can be something that's organic and good for the band and good for the fans, most importantly. Linkin Park developed their first gaming app, 8-Bit Rebellion, back in 2010. Do you have plans to soon release another game anytime? We have 55 million plus fans on Facebook, and knowing that's a strong place for us and knowing that a lot of those people are gamers, we wanted to make something again that we would enjoy playing, that they would enjoy playing, and that falls in line with the way we see our band -- and also, in this full case, that has a philanthropic component. Recharge is going to be a Facebook game set in a future time where the world's natural resources have almost run out and you, as a player, are part of a rebellion, since the bad guys have gotten their hands on the Earth's remaining resources and are using them to enslave the rest of the planet. You're going to fight the tyrannical bad guys; and on the real way, any money produced from certain items that you might spend money on in the game would benefit Music For Relief, which is our organization to combat environmental crisis, climate change, also to provide relief to those who've suffered from natural disasters. That ties the theme of the game into something along the same lines in real life. Linkin Park has done a lot of charity work over the last decade. How do you think applications have changed the philanthropic space? I think two places where it's been really apparent are the online component and being able to reach that via mobile and the text-to-donate component. When something happens and you really want to go to work and do some good for the people who need it, being able to do that in as few clicks as possible or reaching persons in that moment of realization when they want to help -- whether or not it's a dollar -- means a world of difference. Forming in 1996, Linkin Park has grown in popularity in tandem with the Internet really. We had a intentional concentrate on it from the beginning really. Spelling our band name "Linkin" was to get the dot com and that just set the tone for us. And over time, everybody just started to switch. We were always a part of that and it's always been a way for us to keep linked with the other person and with our fans, to stay linked with families at home when we were on the road -- and now it's just second nature. I'm personally very interested in technology. I love finding out about new technology and apps, and in some cases, if we can be a part of the innovation process that's amazing and it's one of my favorite things to do. When it comes back around to releasing music or entertaining our fans, or staying linked to our fans, that's high on our list. For example, one of the places where we've put a lot of focus and made some headway is our direct-to-consumer campaigns where we try to spread the word every chance we get that if you want to buy a Linkin Park song or album, do it from LinkinPark.com. You don't have to go to other places to buy it and we incentivize fans to make it interesting. Along with most other bands, you've certainly minimized your MySpace promotional initiatives in recent years. Does MySpace have a future? I'm currently not using it very much, so I wouldn't be the best person to ask. I don't know, so that might be a function of it being lame totally, or maybe I'm just missing the boat. What can you tell me about the new Linkin Park album? Will singer Chester Bennington be a part of it? There's not much I can say, at this point, but Chester has not left our band. He's just doing Stone Temple Pilots when he's got days off and it's not a major deal as far as scheduling goes. We're very supportive of him and he's doing great with them and they're having fun playing. As far as we're concerned, we're going to have some interesting stuff going on in the future. I would say there are some surprises lined up in the coming months and I can't tell anybody about them, but you're definitely going to want to watch Linkin Park, be it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube, wherever you're connected and want to stay in touch with the band. There'll definitely be some cool stuff happening in the coming months. The all-singing, all-dancing embodiment of frustration is when my computer acts sluggish for no good reason. Growl for Mac keeps you notified read more. I know I've got a lot of RAM and a decent processor, so why won't the blasted contraption do as it's told? RAM boosting programs just never appear to work as well as they should, and so a few weeks ago I started out digging into other possible sources of those embarrassing and annoying computus interruptus moments. One possible solution is to manually adjust your virtual memory, stored in a paging file. Make sure that your paging file Initial Size and Maximum Size are set to the same number to avoid serious defragmentation. Why do this? Isn't your onboard RAM enough? Well, don't take this the wrong way, but no. When your computer starts using large chunks of RAM, it looks to the paging file--also known as the swap file--for a vigorous back rub and comforting words of encouragement: in other words, the paging file offers relief. However, if the paging file isn't large enough, you'll commence to see even basic processes take much longer than they should. Getting your paging file into condition is a simple operation, if you're confident delving into submenus and manually making adjustments. In Windows XP, open your My Computer Properties, then under the Advanced tab click on Performance Settings, hit the Advanced tab in the new window, and click on Virtual Memory Change. The paging file should be set to at least 1.5 times the amount of RAM onboard. Many experts caution against any smaller than that. Set both the Initial Maximum and Size Size to the same level. By doing this, you prevent the paging file from growing and adding to disk fragmentation incrementally. Vista users face a similar procedure. From the Start menu, hit the Computer button on the right, and right-click on your C drive and choose System then. From there, click on Advanced System Settings and under the Advanced tab, choose Performance Settings. Choose the Advanced tab in the window that opens and Change Virtual Memory. Vista users should follow the same guidelines as those with XP machines: keep the Initial Size and Maximum Size the same, but no less than one and a half times the amount of RAM you've got. Aside from making sure that you fragment early and often, you should see a drastic reduction in your computer's sluggishness. Of course, if your computer hasn't been sluggish in the first place, you're not likely to notice much of anything. There are true multitaskters--the guys who can keep their minds on 10 tasks at once--and then there are the flitters, those whose brain jumps from one item on the to-do list to another and for whom the phrase "out of sight, out of mind" is more apology than warning. If that's you, you're going to enjoy getting to know DESKonTOP, a small, simple virtual desktop manager that lets you view desktop files and icons regardless of which window is currently open. Right-click on top of the virtual desktop to access the Options menu. DESKonTOP inhabits the system tray; right-click to pull up a complete set of desktop files and left-click for an icon-driven view. Either real way, clicking the individual file launches it on top of your current screen, which saves you from switching manually. You do have some control over cosmetic trifles like icon size on the virtual desktop view and whether or not the program runs on start-up, but additional preferences are scant--this is a one-trick program, and I of love it for that kind. For a different spin on desktop management, see my colleague Peter Butler's article on 360desktop, a free program, in beta now, that significantly increases the surface area of your desktop. If there's something you like even better, share it with us in the comments. One IM to rule them all--wherever you are. |
